Frank Bridge - Sextet, Quintet and Lament
The Raphael Ensemble, comprising six of Britain's finest string players, has been leading the field in the quintet and sextet repertoire for nearly twenty years. They have a strong following both at home and abroad and critics everywhere have applauded their passionate commitment to this medium.
Their recordings for Hyperion have brought international recognition and acclaim; their debut recording of Brahms Sextets, was selected for BBC Radio 3's Critics Choice of 1989 and Hi-Fi News and Record Review's Best Recording of 1989. Classic CD welcomed their recording of Schubert's Quintet and ranked it as one of the finest out of over twenty recordings. The latest addition to their discography is a recording of Mendelssohn Quintets released in 1998, shortlisted for a Gramophone Award and winner of the Diapason d'Or in France. Many of The Raphael Ensemble Recordings were made in live concert performances at St. George's Brandon Hill, Bristol, where in 1996 they were appointed Ensemble In Residence.
The Raphael Ensemble has given many BBC broadcasts, both of the well-known masterpieces and of neglected gems. They have performed regularly at The Wigmore Hall and at London's South Bank Centre and at the Bath, Cheltenham and Edinburgh Festivals and at The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts.
Abroad, The Raphael Ensemble have toured Norway, Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Spain, The Far East and South America with performances at The Bergen Festival, Musee d'Orsay, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Megaron in Athens and at Berlin's Philharmonie. They made their North American debut in October 1995, which included performances in New York, Washington and Vancouver, and this was followed by a second tour in October 1997.
Recent highlights have included tours of Scotland, Germany and Spain.
