The Raphael Ensemble record at a church in
the south-west of the United Kingdom, the19th century chapel of
St. George's Brandon Hill, Bristol.
Recently renovated, and equipped with a small control room by
the B.B.C., this beautiful church has extraordinary acoustics
and is particularly suited for the performance of chamber music.
The Ensemble discovered the church as a result of a live broadcast and fell in love with the sound. They asked the owner of Hyperion Records, Ted Perry, if they might use the venue for future recording sessions and he agreed.
Developing a relationship with respected producer Andrew Keener, and renewing contact with their original recording engineer, Tony Faulkner, The Raphael Ensemble feel that they now have the perfect team and location to capture their unique sound.
Recording sessions now follow a familiar pattern, with the detailed work taking place over a number of days and finally, a recording of the entire piece taking place before an invited audience. Secure in the knowledge that the work is safely recorded, the Ensemble are then able to give an uninhibited performance, often resulting in a recording that can be used as the basis for the eventual release.
Further information, including notes on the recordings, and a technical overview of the recording process by The Raphael Ensemble's producer Andrew Keener and recording engineer Tony Faulkner will appear here at a later date.
